Calling for NHL Accountability
The NHL Must Address Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault
The Problem
A Crisis in Professional Hockey
We are urging the St. Louis Blues and the National Hockey League to implement immediate, meaningful reforms to address domestic violence and sexual assault within professional hockey. Recent roster decisions by the Blues, including players like Logan Mailloux and Milan Lucic with documented histories of assault and violence, highlight a systemic problem that demands urgent attention.
The NHL stands alone among major professional sports leagues in lacking a comprehensive, enforceable policy addressing domestic violence and sexual assault. This absence of clear standards allows individuals with documented histories of abuse to continue in prominent roles without transparent accountability measures, sending a troubling message to fans, survivors, and communities that athletic performance can overshadow serious off-ice conduct.
With domestic violence affecting over 10 million Americans annually, no institution—including professional sports—can remain passive in addressing this crisis.
We call on the NHL and the St Louis Blues to:
- Establish a comprehensive domestic violence and sexual assault policy featuring clear standards, consequences, and investigation protocols
- Implement suspension procedures for players under credible investigation and require completion of verified accountability programs before reinstatement
- Mandate ongoing education and prevention training for all players, coaching staff, and organizational personnel
- Collaborate with domestic violence professionals and survivor advocacy groups to develop trauma-informed, survivor-centered approaches
This is not a demand for perfection—it is a call for progress and leadership. The NHL has an opportunity to demonstrate that integrity and accountability are as valued as athletic achievement.
Professional hockey must be a space free from domestic violence. The time for action is now.
